N. American solar, wind power will double in 10 years

Electricity generated from solar, wind and other non-traditional sources will probably double in the next 10 years, the Wall Street Journal reported, citing a report to be released today by Navigant Consulting Inc. The study, funded largely by U.S. and Canadian power and utility companies, forecasts that the global renewable energy industry will have annual sales of $35 billion by 2013, up from $17 billion now, the newspaper said. The cost of power generated by wind turbines has fallen to 3 to 3.5 cents a kilowatt-hour in the U.S.; that generated by burning natural gas has risen to 5.5 cents a kilowatt-hour, as gas inventories were depleted during a winter that was harsh in some parts of the country, the Journal said, citing analysts. Wind power in North America will rise to 60,000 megawatts in the next decade, from 27,000 now, the paper said, citing the Navigant study.
