Canada may offer rebates for energy-saving homes

A Canadian government committee approved a plan to offer an average rebate of C$1,000 ($737) to residents who make their houses more energy-efficient, the Globe and Mail said, citing unidentified people familiar with the plan. The program to upgrade existing homes is part of Canada's plan to fight global warming under the Kyoto Protocol on climate change, the Globe said. The rebate payments would vary, depending on the amount of renovation, the newspaper said. Eligible upgrades will include better insulation, sealing, weather-stripping, windows, ventilation and heating equipment, the Globe reported. Ministers on the cabinet's climate-change committee, which is responsible for dividing up Canada's C$1.7 billion Kyoto fund, approved the rebate program on Monday, the Globe said. It should gain approval from the full cabinet ``easily,'' the paper said. The fund is to be used for helping Canada meet its targets under the Kyoto Protocol, which Prime Minister Jean Chretien ratified in December, committing to lowering emissions of greenhouse gases to 6 percent below 1990 levels by 2012.
